Hi... thought I'd take a break in the conifer series and take a bit of a hike about our snow laden gardens...

It was just too cold to venture out with the camera with lows to -12 and single digit highs until today. This morning saw the sun peaking through for a few moments and temps close to 20 degrees fahrenheit so I thought I'd start up the snow blower and create about a quarter mile's worth of trails about the gardens... no such luck, I simply couldn't get that engine to turn over so I decided to climb through the drifts and check out the gardens. One thing is for sure... there's no shortage of rabbits this winter... tracks are everywhere. Tall conical evergreens are in bad shape... we must have had some ice before the snow and many trunks lean to 45 degrees. Even the tops of some of the fastigiate english oaks are touching the ground. There's really no point in trying to do anything now... based on previous experience I know a broom often does more damage than good. In the spring I'll tie up the arborvitaes that I can with old nylons, and the others will make good wood for trellises. I was pleased that all the burlap protective wrappings stayed in place despite the high winds we had... you'll notice them in some of the photos. After I trekked around for awhile, and took a few spills trying to get through four foot drifts, I decided to get out the camera... getting photos and checking out the gardens will be much more pleasant once I get those trails cut!
