With this post, I complete my review of the 2010 garden season, covering October through the first snow which occurred on December 12th. To date we've had three and a half months of snow basically and based on recent trends, it may be awhile before we are snow free. Our temperatures have been single digits overnight all week and I have no idea how these will affect the blooms on the magnolias this year as we did experience some warm weather awhile back. The link to all nine posts relating to the 2010 garden review can be found on the right side of this page for those who might be interested.
2010 was great year for the mums... they bloomed long and beautifully...
Here are the waning blooms of clematis and roses...
Surfinia petunias bloomed into frost temperatures...
Malva Zebrina is a self seeder for me and a late season bloomer...
Turning foliage marks early to mid-October...
The unfurling blooms of brugsmansia Charles Grimaldi are colorful up till frost...
Promise for future bloom... the uncommon magnolia 'Crescendo' turns yellow amongst the mums...
Fall color includes the lovely fruits of flowering crabs...
... as well as the rose colored bracts of "Seven Sons"...
There is a sullen atmosphere as plants succumb to late season cold...
Brugsmansias bloom amongst the fallen foliage of the ash trees...
I particularly enjoy Scarlet Oak in the fall...
Emerald Queen maple assumed its fall colors...
There's something nice about the process of putting the gardens to bed and moving to the hibernation of a few months enveloped in snow with time to follow other pursuits...
I wasn't anxious for the snow to come... but when it did I was reminded that is was indeed very lovely... but now it's almost April and a year ago we had daffodils in bloom on April 1st... so enough already. I am full up and bursting to be amongst growing plants and unfurling blooms. The frustration is almost overwhelming... so I'll say goodbye for now and I'll return when we get some serious photosynthesis! Larry
