Last year I was visiting a private garden/nursery two hours from here and saw a large mat of foliage in one of the gardens. The gentleman explained that it was a gentian. I of course had heard of gentians, but never actually had seen one. He agreed to sell me a small piece if I would go right home and plant it immediately, as he said they do not like transplanting at all. Last post I included a photo of the buds which I found to be quite amazing. Well today Gentiana acaulis, a native to Central and Southern Europe opened it's five buds and I am overwhelmed by its beauty... this is the something special... (Gentian afterthought... after all the odd extra effort, a friend also brought me a piece of a Gentian acaulis later in the summer... it transplanted beautifully with no big 'to do'.... hmmm... interesting!)
For the 'something sad' part of this post, my constant companion Cricket had to be euthanized today. She was sixteen and a half years old and I have never grieved as much in my entire life as these past couple days after having to make the decision. I couldn't bare to take her in so my dear wife did so while I was at my cardiologist appointment. I guess my attachment really began seven years ago when I was in and out of the hospital many times with some very serious health issues including a blood infection picked up in the hospital that almost killed me. Whenever I was home, Cricket was in my lap with her head under my chin... we became inseparable. But alas all good things must come to an end and sometimes in the life of a little dog, we have to face our own mortality... I will never forget the love in these eyes...
