This is a special tale told in my gardens each autumn. While not Sleeping Beauty and the Seven Dwarfs, Mary Potter and the Seven Sons deserve their own claim to fame in the ongoing cycle of this small part of the earth. As winter approaches, Mary's fruits color up more brilliantly with each passing day, leaving behind their orange tones in favor of scarlet reds. The Seven Sons (Heptacodium miconioides) blushes rose in her presence.
As lovely as a fairy tale, this combination causes no concern for poison apples, magic mirrors, or glass coffins... with no need for pathos, it is the stuff happy endings are made from as autumn slips into winter and sleep comes to Mary Potter... only to be wakened again by the kiss of spring rains as gentle as any prince, and in the presence of the Seven Sons by her side. It is a story that will be retold for decades to come, and a special part of the garden year here at Oak Lawn. Larry
