Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite grasses. I love its colors in reds and oranges, and its darker purple reds into fall. For me it grows at 2-3 feet in height and a couple feet across.
I find myself very concerned over trying new grasses... I don't want thugs that spread by rhizomes or seeds. Occasionally I find a grass that meats my strict requirements in the gardens... for me, Shenandoah fits the bill. Although I've read that it can spread quickly by rhizomes, that has not been my experience here in the rich loam at Oak Lawn Cheese Factory, in fact, it was slow to establish.
It is at its best in the fall and becomes a wonderful subject for photography. Like fireworks on a warm July evening, it captures my imagination and appreciation.
