Delphiniums are a pain to raise... but some things are worth the pain and I put delphniums in that category. It goes like this... I start a bunch of delphinium seeds (usually Magic Fountains)... some germinate but many don't. The ones that do get planted in the ground. It takes a couple of years and they start to make a decent show... then I generally get a couple of years of glorious beauty that requires hours of staking... then all of a sudden one spring... no delphiniums, so the whole process starts over. I suppose it would make sense to have plants growing in some out of the way spot at all times so I could do a quick transplant in the year of the demise... but I don't have any out of the way spots that aren't planted full, and I never get around to thinking that far ahead anyway.
You may recall that somewhere along the way I learned about the New Milenium hybrids out of New Zealand. I ordered a whole lot of seeds directly from New Zealand and highly anticipated growing delphiniums that last for many years in the gardens... I've heard reports from friends that have had plants for as much as ten years. Unfortunately, germination did not go well at all... I'm not blaming the seeds... I'm sure I did something wrong. I did end up with a few young plants and am hoping for a bit of a show this spring.
Let me share more photos of delphiniums I have grown and enjoyed from the past two or three seasons... take care, Larry
