This is a continuation of my archive rebuilding project. Today's topic is daylilies and by way of warning, this is going to be a very long post... lots of pictures since I don't have a lot to say. I truly enjoy daylilies but I seldom keep track of their names. Many of my plants are seedlings from the hybridization program of a gardening acquaintance, and I'll also include some of my own seedlings, all of which don't have names.

Part 4: Hybridizing just for fun...
A couple years ago I decided to try my hand at hybridizing some daylilies. The following photos are from their first season with blooms and I actually am pleased with a number of them. I was looking for doubleness, interesting petal edges, and soft colors with contrasting eyes. I ended up with about 400 new plants and will cull them this coming summer. I can tell you that I won't be as particular about what stays as I should be... after all, these are my babies!
I have no intention of naming any of these plants nor did I keep track of the parentage... I will say that it was a blast seeing each new bloom open and guessing which plants in the garden were the parents... it is sometimes relatively easy to tell.
This year I have 150 plants growing under lights and my main goal is a later bloom period and darker eyes so I picked the parents with that in mind. These plants were started well before Christmas and some may bloom this summer.

Take care, Larry
