| Asiatic lily Strawberry Creme |
Hello! I feel like complaining about the weather but goodness knows so many have it much worse throughout the country so I'll keep my grumbling for my poor wife to listen to... since we are coming into daylily and lily season, the next several posts will probably include a lot of them. In addition to 600 plants of my own hybridizing, I probably have another 300-400 named cultivars and seedlings of other hybridizers... many of these plants are duplicated several times over throughout the gardens so I'm to the point where I really don't know what I have any longer and the majority of varietal names have been lost for all time.

| This may be a seedling from a friend's program, but I'm unsure of that. |
The following two cultivars look very similar except for the petal shapes and slightly wider dark edge on the second plant.

This asiatic is quite lovely when seen by itself, but when other lilies start to bloom I generally have to dead head this plant in many locations as it contrasts way too loudly.
The first of many orienpet lilies opened today... they are truly my favorites as I love the huge blooms and height of many of the cultivars to seven feet in my gardens... and let's not forget the amazing fragrance that at times fills the air. This is Holland Beauty and it is blooming at six feet.
The following plants are LA's (Longiflorum x asiatic). The ones that I have and am familiar with work well in mass plantings but to me they are a bit short on personality when planted by themselves.
I particularly like the form of the following asiatic called Red Velvet... it is quite tall and makes a marvelous candlelabra shape . My favorite of this group is Ariadne, but they appeared to freeze this spring and I've lost them.
Now back to some more hemerocallis. Some of you have said you're having problems with your daylily foliage and I've got several plants with the same concerns. My friend Frog Pond called me with some information that certainly makes sense. A hybridizing friend of his once told him that these foliage problems frequently relate to too cold temps in spring on the new foliage. It sure fits my scenario as we had weeks of frost after the plants started growing this year.
The red blooms are seedlings from an acquaintance's breeding program and the yellows are the cultivar called Joel.
Other seedlings from the same program are pictured below... despite the fact that these blooms look very similar, they aren't the same cultivar... notice the difference in the ruffling on the edges of the petals and the slightly darker tones in the second plant.
Here are a couple named varieties...

The following three are hybrids of my crossing... The first has quite tight stitching about the edges of the petals.
I'll close with a martagon called Russian Morning. I got a good price on martagons and planted a number of them this spring. This is definitely not the best time to plant them and many did not come up, although friends have told me they frequently will come up the following year. Martagons can be very expensive, probably relating to how very slowly they form clumps. I really need to plant more this fall and have found a good source in England that I am considering buying from... they are such a special plant for the partially shaded garden. All for now, Larry
