It's the first day of spring in Wisconsin... last year at this time we were in the mid-80's! Today's stats include 12 degrees at noon with WNW winds at 18 mph... feels like temperatures are -5. For My European friends, that's fahrenheit... not celsius! I just came in from clearing drives and paths through the gardens so that we can get to the bird feeders and keep an eye out for damage to the trees.
I am reminded of the song "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast... below is just one of a number of magnolias that are ripe for the picking (by rabbits that is)...
Be our guest from Beauty and the Beast
Ma chere Mademoiselle (bunny)... it is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you here tonight (NOT!!)
And now we invite you to relax,
pull up a chair (or climb a snowbank)
as the dining room proundly presents ... your dinner!
Be our guest! Be our guest!
Put our service to the test
Tie your napkin 'round your neck, cherie
And we'll provide the rest
Soup du jour
Hot hors d'oeuvres
Why we only live to serve
Try the grey stuff (magnolia buds and branches)...
These drifts are rock hard and at least four feet deep in many cases... deeper away from the trees... Sarah and I dug out several trees not long ago.... the hardest part is just getting to the trees. Today we're visiting the local beauty salon and getting a bag of human hair to mix with Milorganite which is made from sewage in Milwaukee I believe... spread about the crowns of these trees, it will hopefully deter the rabbits... wish me luck!
