I'm trying to share a few photos from the garden each day... our burst of 70's is bringing things on quickly now. The last several days have seemed bittersweet to me. As I meander in the garden I am finding so much loss from the winter as well as the rabbits. I was heartbroken to find my larger Gentiana acaulis died from the extreme moisture of the deep snow cover this season... it pretty much rotted away but thankfully a smaller one from a dear friend is growing and for that I am thankful. Actually I may be reacting to the side effects of the vicodin that is making an effort to control my kidney pain, while I await surgery on Thursday. As I noted earlier, I am now involved in bridging therapy to help protect me against emboli and that is the reason for the surgery delay.
I've actually spent much of the day deciding what stays, what goes, and where new plantings will be made. Our younger son is twenty-six and is coming out to install a number of good sized conifers this evening. When I told him that his mom and I were concerned about him doing this since he and his wife are extremely busy, he said he'd rather help us than anyone else. I can't tell you how blessed I feel with our two boys and their families... they are "more than I deserve" as the expression goes!
I came across this attractive double helebore (above) today. It is putting on a good show as is the single spotted below...
I don't usually take the time to lay about the gardens in the spring and just observe. It's amazing the variety of migrating birds I'm seeing and some seem almost tame as they come within five feet of me as I lay on the warm grass and am enjoying the warm breezes that have brought the 70's in our direction.
I've also been admiring the form of a couple of my Fagus sylvaticas or European beeches. The first is "Asplenifolia" or the fern-leaf beech...
This one is "Purple Fountains"...
I realize that I am getting to the point of needing to decide location first, prior to purchasing new plants... it is very difficult to place anything new unless it's a shade lover. I am going to curtail buying for the season very shortly but am waiting for a second Cornus 'Venus' after losing the first to last season's severe heat... I have no idea where to put it as it gets very large... please Sarah, don't read this part of this post! I have one of those amazing wives who is right about 95% of the time.... her question of the day is "where is it going?' I honestly have no idea! I did cut back on my magnolia order to only five new ones this season... "where are they going?" ... I have no idea!!! I am still distressed that my 110 lily bulbs never arrived from England... "Where were they going?" I had no idea!!
I guess you get the point...
Larry
