The opulence of mid spring has given way to a more subtle and relaxed tone in the gardens. This is the time of the lilacs and the late blooming crab apples. Last evening brought two and a half inches of rain, and throughout the gardens, foliage has developed to its best perfection... rich in greens, chartreuse, and blues.
Let's visit the lilacs first...
most of these photos are from the past two days...
The later blooming flowering crab apples, most with sargentii in their makeup...
Several magnolias continue to show bloom,
albeit less heavily than on the past weekend...
The Aesculus carnea 'Briottii' is coming into bloom,
lighter in color than in cooler years ...
And closer to the ground...
The Lewisias begin their bloom in hyper-tuffa...
And conifers start to display their new growth which is one of my very favorite events in the gardens...
Take care, Larry
Would you believe that once again we have frost warnings for tonight and tomorrow night... this is without a doubt my least favorite thing about gardening, but once again I will haul out the boxes of old bed spreads, sheets, and tablecloths... hopefully the fully foliated trees will ofer additional protection...
