A photo journal for the first of July in a very late season... weather in the mid-70's and thankfully, the excessive rains have left us. We are surrounded by thousands of earwigs and very appreciative of 'Sluggo plus'. It is saving our hostas and especially the vincas which can be devastated overnight. These are the days we dream about... wafted by cool fresh air as we take a break in a favorite chair.... we are surrounded by plants in full bud and starting to bloom... the rains have been consistent and heavy... some local farmers haven't yet planted their fields which are basically mud, a very sad thing in farm country... but the daylilies love this and it's been a very long time since I've seen them so lush. Asiatics and orienpets are among the lilies that sport swollen buds..summer will burst forth any day now!
In the fall of 1963, I was a freshman in high school. I clearly recall getting on the school bus that first day... the bus would transport us the twenty some miles to Montpelier H.S. in Montpelier, Vermont. At that point our little country community gave us a choice of where we wished to attend secondary school since it would be three years before the new Union H.S. would be built. As I got on the bus with my slightly too long hair, the bus driver inquired as to whether I was a "beatle" and I had no clue what he was talking about.
Just over five months later, on February 9th, I distinctly recall being as vocal as all the other members of my youth group, as we cajoled our leader into letting us depart early so we could make it home to watch the Ed Sullivan Show at 8:00 p.m. By then I was totally cognizant of what my bus driver has meant by his comment and were we ever excited! The Beatles had won us over!
That was just short of 50 years ago... within three years, a song written by Paul McCartney at the age of 16, showed up on the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" ... I particularly enjoyed the tune called "When I'm 64". Well... it's been a prolonged wait, but my wife actually kissed me goodbye as she left for work this morning and reminded me that we will be going out for dinner with friends this evening... after all these 42 years of marriage I now definitively know the answer... it's YES!! Of course I refer to the song... "will you still need me, will you still feed me.. when I'm 64?"
Today I turned 64 and I can finally relax... we're in it for the long term!
Take care, Larry
