I'm not sure that I am... ready for October that is! There is so much to do and seemingly too little time. Actually that's not entirely true as I seem to wear out a bit faster these days and have to take the odd break from time to time. The latest project is a new wall for the north side of the greenhouse since the zippers wore out on the large flap of reinforced material that it came with. Talk about improvising... developing the structure for this change has involved lots of steel piping, tec screws, and lumber. I'm adding a couple of doors that can remain open for circulation in the summertime. The original thought was to install a patio door but I decided it might be too heavy for the structure so I picked up a couple light weight storm doors that should do the trick.
I think that the one thing I don't like about October is the noticeable shortening of the days... I really miss being able to keep at my projects until 9:00 in the evening. The photo above was taken at 6:30 p.m. and that sun was pretty close to the horizon. On the other hand, October weather is gorgeous and it's a thrill to soak up every possible moment outside that I can.
I simply adore Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' this time of year... it reminds me of a beautiful fireworks display...
I know I'll miss them for a few weeks in spring, but the landscape pictured below is none the worse for the removal of the two 30 foot tall 'Spring Snow' crab apples...the absence of falling diseased leaves throughout much of the summer will be much appreciated...
These Rudbeckia 'Indian Summer' just don't give up... what a blast of color for the late summer and fall...
I love my blues and I still feel the 'Moerheim' spruces have some of the best blue color and form of any of the blue spruces I grow...
That about ends this day as midnight is fast approaching. Lots of transplanting to do once the greenhouse project is completed. The local soybeans will soon be harvested and that means that I should be able to access the rocks for the new rock gardens within the next week or so. I've been made aware of an older arborvitae hedge that is to be removed in the next few days... I'll get a large trailer and collect a couple loads of the trees to bring home, saw off the twigs and branches, and end up with some sturdy logs for building several new arbors. Glass commissions are quickly piling up as well, so I'm trying to pull some of those together when I have the time, and I'm still hoping to get much of the kitchen "tune-up" completed before Thanksgiving. It's a blessing to be busy... right now I feel especially blessed!
