When I went into the gardens around 5:15 this morning, the air was heavy with moisture and I found the azalea walk to be pretty much at peak. As the day progressed, temps rose into the 80's and the blooms began to fade. These are The Northern Lights series of azaleas that normally bloom near the first of June... this is a time when we usually get some hot and windy days and this season is no different. As with the tree peonies, blooms can be quite short lived in this kind of weather, but for a moment in time, it's a pretty special stroll when the azaleas are in bloom...

The darker blooms are Rosy Lights... a bit harder to establish here... |
I added the azalea walk a year ago this past fall...In addition to azaleas, there is a wall of magnolias that didn't perform that well this season because of the very cold winter, tulips, and a number of specimen conifers. Peonies will be coming into bloom here shortly as well, later June brings asiatic lilies with Rodgersia and Dictamnus, and then early to mid July will herald the blooms of many, many orienpet lilies...
All for now, Larry
