I am in the process of reviewing the 2010 garden season, if for no other reason than to journal bloom periods for comparisons with other years. My previous post covered March 15th through May 1st. May creates a predicament in that there are so many things blooming that it can overwhelm a single post, and for that reason I've taken us only through May 20th in this latest offering. If interested in what was going on in the garden prior to May 1st, scroll back to preceding post. Here goes...
By the 2nd of May, the orchid lights azaleas were just coming into bloom... they tend to be earlier than other varieties of the Northern Lights series...
I had also finished installing the fourth column in front of a Moerheim spruce and a Picea omorica Nana by the second of May...
Magnolia Daybreak was fully open as an accompaniment to Magnolia Elizabeth on May 2nd...
May 3rd found phlox subulatas in full bloom and most hosta foliage was unfurling and enlarging... and lots of fragrant crabs in full bloom...
Fast forward to May 7th with late tulips such as Blushing Beauty in bloom and the later Sargentii flowering crab cultivars were fully open...
The next 'big thing' in blooms is lilacs and there were plenty blooming around the second week of May...
By May 10th , lots of fun things were happening in the rockery... primula had been in bloom for some time and now the epimediums were coming into their own as well...
The following photo taken on May 8th displays just a portion of the plants in the greenhouse that were developing rapidly...
There is no way that I can share all the things that were happening in the gardens around mid-May, but I will have to point out the Lewisias and epimediums that I absolutely love!
At this point I'll skip ahead to the 20th of May, leaving all sorts of blooming plants unmentioned I'm afraid. For me it's a toss-up as to my favorite month in the gardens, between May and July... both being amazingly abundant in their offerings! The later white lights azaleas were at peak on the 20th and combined nicely with an Alexandrina magnolia and Anemone sylvestris...
In other parts of the gardens, intermediate iris were in full bloom on the 20th...
This too was the season of bloom for the Aesculus carnea 'Briotti'...
Normally large leafed rhododendrons and tree peonies bloom around the 6th of June, but not so last season. There was so much happening in May that there is no way I can share it all in this post so for now I'll end with the 20th... until next time, Larry
