As noted previously, 2010 seemed to be a good two to three weeks ahead of schedule, but things evened out a bit as July approached. The highlight of July really is the lilies and that starts out with the asiatics, pictured here in warm colors...
I've also planted a number of the new Tango hybrids, Burgundy Splash is a favorite...
Hostas are also at peak appearance in the month of July... I use the area pictured below to grow on new cultivars that I've purchased as very small plants...
Clematis continue to bloom well into July... I am particularly partial to type 3 viticella hybrids which tend towards less problems with clematis wilt...
By the end of the first week of July, annuals and roses brought color to the east gardens...
We use a lot of annuals and July is always pretty colorful, particularly about the arbor...
Now back to lilies... there are the trumpets...
And a multitude of orienpets
Robina...
Silk Road...
Vice Versa...
Maywood...
Holland Beauty...
Honeymoon...
Pizzazz...
And a host of other orienpet cultivars... I do grow a number of orientals as well, but they are not long lived here... one final shots of orienpets...
July is also the best season for our hemerocallis and we have many varieties. I have gotten away from purchasing a lot of named cultivars, in fact, the names of many have long since disappeared. The last few years I have been buying unnamed seedlings from a program that I admire greatly and I will display a few of those here. I also like large displays of some of the less dramatic plants and July is their season as well. Finally, this season should be exciting as plants of my own hybridizing bloom for the first time... in fact this may be the most exciting aspect of the 2011 garden season... then again... we shall see!
July 2010 daylilies...
I guess I could go on like this for quite awhile, afterall there are hundreds of cultivars in the gardens... it really is best to leave the July gardens for now with a couple of July 2010 parting shots... take care, Larry
