Imagine if you will, arising at first light and going into the gardens, damp with light rain from the night, and overcast with a thin veil of fog. Imagine the quiet at 5:15 a.m... not even the buzz of a single mosquito... only the sound of birds aroused by the first light. The air is moist and warm as a prelude to what will become a sultry summer day and there is only the slightest breeze. This is an apt description of the gardens at Oak Lawn this morning as I walked through them, enjoying the fruits of many hours of hard but rewarding effort... appreciating the opportunity of being in this very place at this very time. Retrace my steps with me if you wish, knowing that given a week or two, much will be transformed to literal waves of color as lily and hemerocallis season will soon be upon us... a favorite time of the year at this old cheese factory.
My walk begins at the arbor and that is where it will end... the views are many. In recognition of the stillness of the morning hour, no comments will be provided during this small journey... just enjoy the textures and color... and especially the solitude which is one of the special things about living in farm country. Once the chores of the day are completed, there is almost perfect silence until mid morning of the following day... yes one hears the sounds of the natural world but other than a very occasional passerby, stillness falls and all is well as it has been for decades... this is what keeps me in this place.
Take care, Larry
