If there is one thing I've learned over the years, when I see a really spectacular plant for a really good price... buy it on the spot! I can't tell you the times I've left a nursery pondering whether I should purchase something that while not one of a kind, was a rare find.... only to return later and find it had been sold.
Yesterday I saw a Pinus densiflora 'Oculus Draconis'... it's the first time I've ever seen one except in books and the price was amazing... it now belongs to me!
This pine is also known as the dragon eye pine... look at the area surrounding the center buds in this photo... the reason for the nomenclature quickly becomes obvious...
Now... the problem with the advice I just offered... where to put another tree that gets quite large eventually, needs a lot of protection as its variegation can easily winter burn despite its being hardy, and should be in view of the house windows so that it can be enjoyed thoroughly... I'll let you know when I come up with an answer for this one!
For now it's a lovely accompaniment to the dahlias and petunias!
Anyone for a really big pot of petunias?! Take care, Larry
