One searches for the beauty among the frost damage and it is interesting to note that with the cold weather, we are getting what seems like a second season of hellebore bloom. As noted in a previous post, these new blooms are much more rich and colorful than what came earlier in all that heat. Here are a couple examples.
There are other gems in the garden that seem to relish the cold... I would include Lathyrus vernus, the pink form pictured below...
Here and there one finds a magnolia whose placement has allowed it to escape the effects of frost...
And on these moonlit nights, as one peers into the gardens, the ghosts of all sorts of trees appear in view... actually these swaddling clothes are the very things that may save the lives of the japanese maples and other plantings during this seasonal weather that was so unfortunately preceded by three weeks of extreme warmth. I will be so happy when I no longer have to concern myself with this course of events... take care, Larry
