Iris in Greek mythology was the goddess of the rainbow who acted as a messenger of the gods. Today I want to take a moment away from my conifer series and deal with a specific species of iris and some of its cultivars, that being Iris sibirica from the family Iridaceae. We grow perhaps 30 cultivars, although I've never actually counted them and many are coming into full bloom just now with others being slightly later. I've picked a few favorites for today to include in photo studies...
#1: name unknown
The plant pictured in bloom above and below is a taller variety that may need staking because of the larger size of it's blooms... unfortunately I can't locate the name of this cultivar but it really is an outstanding blue...

Study #2: "Sweet Surrender"

# 3: "Blue Pendant"

#4: "That's My Baby"

#4: "Riverdance"

#5: "Illini Glory"

#6: "Charming Billy" (an absolute favorite in my collection...)
I could go on, but I've got trees to plant and lawns to mow...
Happy gardening, Larry
