Linking this week to Outdoor Wednesday, Fishtail Cottage Garden Party, and Fertilizer Friday.
Of my many orienpet cultivars, I can say that I've saved the best for last... my Scheherazade and Pizzazz are now coming into bloom and it is their form that I appreciate most among the many orienpets that I grow. Many of the orienpet lilies face out with very large blooms congested on the tall stems... they are amazing indeed, but the subtleties of the two aforementioned cultivars supersede all the others growing here as far as I am concerned. This year I staked them so that the stems would splay apart a bit, that the individual blossoms might be better appreciated. At eight feet in height, they do not disappoint. Please join me in my ode to these two fabulous cultivars...

I really appreciate the candelabra and turk's cap form of these two cultivars... there is something very regal about lilies that grow in this manner...

There are still a large number of hemerocallis in bloom throughout the gardens, although the extreme heat has played havoc with the foliage this year... here's a pleasing example of one of my personal hybrids...
The large daylily bed has been a disappointment for the second year in a row... I suspect these plants are in need of division which I'll probably take on as soon as the weather gets back to normal and we get some rain. One of my favorites from that area are these tall rich reds that bloom fairly late most years...
The stressfulness of this season with the extreme temperatures , the severity of the drought, the loss of special plants despite my best effort to save them... a recent invasion of raccoons, skunks, and opossums and the accompanying damage...all these things are teaching me lessons in restraint, calmness, and patience. It reminds me of the Biblical lessons of being tempered by fire and strengthened by adversity... I fully expect to come out of this season a better and more appreciative gardener.
On that thought I'll end today's post. My July Bloom Day post from last week follows below...
I'll close with a picture of the supertunias on the arbor which are holding up to this heat very well.
Take care, Larry
