This past spring I limbed up a number of Moerheim spruces along the birch walk and created a shade garden... here are some photos taken over two months later... I am pleased with the look that is starting to develop here...

Now, regarding the title of this post... one doesn't realize how much land a large conifer can eat up over time. As part of my latest garden redo, I limbed up a 28 year old Black Hills Spruce. I was amazed to find its diameter had reached over 25 feet... it's like discovering a whole new canvas that you didn't realize you had. Of course, a man and his chain saw is akin to a person having Lay's potato chips... "you can't eat just one" and I can't stop at debranching just one tree, but that's best left for another post. I'm excited about the new design opportunities and shade possibilities. Like-wise, I have moved past the 'garden room' concept that I used to find so appealing, and am finding new pleasure in "open concept gardening" for lack of a better term. As a friend of mine says, branched up conifers tend to give an aspect of age to the garden, and I love seeing hints of what lies beyond.

While my new garden redo is no where near ready for public viewing, I will toss out a couple 'early in the process' shots as to where I'm heading...

1. A rustic trellis in the form of a semi-circle will become a wall of clematis. Three of the main supports are actually living trees... arborvitaes from which several trunks have been removed and 12 feet of lower foliage/branches as well...

2. This is a picture of the tree with the 25' diameter that had been covered with branches all the way to the ground... that's a lot of virgin soil and room for a number of great plants as well as a few surprises.
