"I'm trying to not watch the news"...

Nature's pointillism

This was the response I gave my sister in a reply to the question "don't you watch the news?!" in reference to a discussion concerning some safety concerns on one of the airlines. It suddenly dawned on me... with everything that is going on in this country and the world, with election after election, with recalls on cars, planes, the food we eat, and government officials... with health care studies that share disastrous things about what we can and can't do to our bodies on almost a daily basis with directly opposing studies a week later... need I go on? They're stealing my joy, or should I say I'm allowing them to steal my joy! I'm not suggesting that one should be uninformed, in fact I for one am 'over-informed'. I know what car I want to drive and really could care less if the auto magazines feel it has an oversteer effect,  I know how I feel about air transportation and that I prefer to drive myself because it gives me a bit of responsibility for getting there in one piece, I eat like I eat and it hasn't changed in 63 years and probably won't until it kills me but at this stage of the game there's no signs of that despite a few aches and pains, I know who I'm voting for and have a pretty good handle on what the candidates stand for and nothing can sway me at this stage of the game... so I ask you... why watch the news?!

I had just tossed a pile of bulb catalogs after discussing with my wife whether we would need any new bulbs this year... within a day we realized that tulips would be a wonderful addition in the new althea and azalea walk areas... this led to some serious dumpster diving!

My joy is and must be a frame of mind, a trust and faith in my God, a love and concern for my fellow man, and all sorts of amazing little things that happen on a daily basis in my life... many garden related. I am not to my knowledge manic about anything but after a half hour national news broadcast I sometimes wonder. It's as I said... the little things that are truly big in my life, like my wife and I cracking Carpathian walnuts with my four and six year old grandsons and having the six year old say "It's really nice being here with family, cracking coconuts"... that's put a smile on my face and bounce in my step for three weeks already!

There are moments when having an old blue cheese factory is a real benefit.

This blog is basically a tale of my gardening hobby, at times its history, and challenges that excite me as I work in the earth. It is also an occasional commentary on how I see my world, and a few of my other interests, including my glass work and my new found interest in photography. It is not meant to be overly studious as there are many blogs out there who do a much better job in a much more knowledgable and informative manner than I am capable of... I do, however enjoy sharing my experiences after gardening for forty years and I do have a few opinions about that gardening process.

One can't deny the beauty of fall mums

As we approach the end of the garden season, other than expecting a bit more fall color, I find myself wishing to continue posting despite a lack of new material. I enjoy doing so and hope that those of you who read my blog enjoy these winter posts as well... I honestly do appreciate all your visits.  There is likely to be some repetition of photos through the winter months... I hope that's ok as I've posted hundreds, if not thousands of pictures over the course of  my 430 posts or so... it's actually more although I've removed a lot of the early ones and I really can't recall all that has been posted. Just know that when the news comes on, I may well sit down at my computer and post a few pictures that I feel capture a small bit of the glorious life of being a gardener. After all, gardening is one of the things that keeps me centered in this life and there are others of course, but that's not what this blog is about, although I refer to them as well from time to time.

Taken on a recent tour of a private garden, this is the awe inspiring work of one man... including the rocks, pond, and conifers... gardeners are an amazing sort of people!

I am beginning the process of organizing some of the photos from my blog postings on Pinterest. I encourage you to visit my site on Pinterest by clicking on the badge at the right side of my blog which says in red letters on white "Follow me on Pinterest".

One of the things that I don't enjoy about this time of the year is the annual ritual of bringing in the houseplants! Case in point... I can hardly get in my shower with these two oleanders filling the back bathroom, with stems to six foot in height, although I do appreciate their blooms all winter... try as I will, I can't seem to cut back on these plants that in many cases have been with us for years...

It's time for me to take an evening garden stroll on this cool but beautiful fall day. This next week will involve a lot of transplanting of lilies and hemerocallis in the gardens. Tender plants meant to spend the winter inside were dealt with over the course of the last couple days for the sake of a hard freeze that never came... it's just as well as that work is done now. I also have to overseed a lot of the outlying lawns which means I'll be watering as this drought is persistent. Oh yes, and one other thing... my package of cypripediums arrived and are planted. I was amazed to see that a couple of the plants had as many as five eyes which is a pretty fine start I'd say. Barring visits from voles and other creatures, or me getting the moisture requirements not quite right, I hope to experience their blooms this coming spring. I doubt that I will be totally relaxed on this account until I see them sprout from the ground... it's scary to think about how much money I put in their special little growing place considering the rocks for the walls, soil amendments, and for the plants themselves but sometimes you just have to take a chance if you want to experience something new in your life... I'm not totally sure whether that's good advice or not... time will tell!

Until next time, Larry
