It's not as if we have a shortage of snow, in fact, we're due another four inches tomorrow and a possible heavier storm on Monday... all the same, spring is in the air... you can feel it. Today the first large garden project of the season took place... it was cold, about 15 degrees, but the sun was warm. Despite the fact that my face was cold enough to cause me difficulty speaking, I loved tgetting started on a new year in the gardens!
You may recall a post not so long ago in which I said these five large trees really have to go... they're siberian elms and among their chief traits are messiness and sucking up all the water around them.
Well, today was the day... first task was to clear out the drifts along the highway so the work could be accomplished. A small high-hoe was perfect for this job...
... as well as coaxing the trees to fall in the right direction...
It was as simple as one...
two...
four...
and five... (this one required a cable as it wasn't weighted in the right direction)...
In between falls each tree was chained to a up large payloader and sent a quarter mile down the road to be used to heat our neighbor's shop...
So, there you have it... of course there will be more clean-up once the snow melts, lots of twigs and such... but I was amazed... the whole deed was done in one and a half hours! What a change... I was concerned that I would be discouraged by the loss of these trees. That's definitely not the case at all as it immediately became evident that a whole new set of possibilities has been opened up!
So... here's the before...
...and here's the after...
I see magnolias, orienpet lilies, daffodils, dwarf conifers, new paths, new fences and arbors, more stone walls... I can't wait... yes indeed, the new garden season has begun at Oak lawn Cheese Factory!
Take care, Larry
