Folk art wonder of the South Dakota Prairie, the Mitchell Corn Palace was first built in 1892 as a gathering spot to celebrate a successful harvest... it has been rebuilt to larger proportions twice since then, the present building being completed in the early 1930's.
The Palace was in the process of getting new murals when we were there... this is a yearly endeavor with the rye and dock around the murals being replaced starting in May. A new theme is picked each year and corn in 13 colors and shades is nailed ear by ear to create the theme... there is now even green corn available for this purpose. The new murals are added between May and October each year. The auditorium serves many functions for the community as well as drawing a half million tourists each year. It's the only one of its kind in the world...
