Snow can frequently be seen into summer on the peaks of the Snowy Range in the Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming and the rock gives the appearance of snow as well. Lake Marie and its sister Mirror Lake are exquisite and the water is as clear as any I've ever seen. There is also a sadness connected with the area in that much of the old growth forest along this scenic byway has died due to the pine bark beetle, especially at lower levels where lodgepole pines predominate. Fortunately these insects leave young trees alone but seeing millions of dead and dying trees along the route was extremely upsetting to me... eventually the forest will be renewed by virtue of its own fresh seedlings.
