With the help of my tree man, we took the flowering crab apple (Radiant) on the left down last fall because it is extremely prone to fungal diseases and apple scab... now I have a problem... not enough shade and too much wind for the primulas and epimediums. Eventually the fern leaf beech will provide the necessary shade but what to do until then... Have been thinking about building a shade structure of some sort but suspect it would look horrible. On top of that, after a slipped disk a week and a half ago, I re-injured my back yesterday afternoon after four hours of bending and removing old hellebore foliage. I think the solution is probably to move out the epimediums and primulas temporarily to pots and then eventually to a new site in June... have just the spot but not ready yet as needs more soil and it's much too wet to deal with at this point... as far as what to bring in here... sempervivums of all sorts... when the shade from the beech gets to be too much, they'll will be easy to move elsewhere. now... I think that's a plan, albeit, somewhat long term as I want to eventually end up where I started in this photo... Can't wait to get at it!...once my back settles down that is!! Wonder if I would wear a brace, I could get more Montgomery spruces cut down today? Really anxious to get at that before my reserve wanes!
Hate missing these beautiful days in the gardens but my back says "be still"... found this old pic from 2008... fun to look back... sometimes this gardener wishes changes hadn't been made! Today wasn't a total loss... I did get the wrappings off a number of conifers and managed six hours of practice on Beethoven's Mass in C, opus 86... only three rehearsals left until performance along with his Choral Fantasy, Opus 80 and Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes... one can't garden all the time!!
Take care, Larry
By the way... want to see a neat garden? Check out this blog about a 42 year old garden in Denmark! I love it!!
