A favorite part of the excitement of spring for me are the formation of cones on the various conifers in the gardens. Pictured here is Abies koreana 'Horstmann's Silberlocke'. I consider these cones to be no less than a work of art!
Elsewhere in the gardens Rhododendron mucronolatum is putting out some delicate blooms...
The north gardens at first light...
Some of the early tulips are approaching the end of their bloom but many more are preparing to show color soon ....
These miniature daffodils are still going strong and I just love them planted en masse....
Actaea racemosa foliage unfurling...
Blood root is blooming throughout the gardens...
It was great fun to discover hepaticas in bloom this afternoon in the gardens...
Pulmonarias are just beginning to bloom...
It reached the low 60's today and spring is finally arriving in east central Wisconsin. I had to dig out two cornus from the gardens yesterday as both were killed by the harsh winter... one was 'Venus' and the second was 'Stellar Pink'. I continue to be concerned about my older tree peonies, especially Hesphestos... I suspect the best that I can hope for is a push of new growth from below ground. I can't help wondering if part of the problem is due to root competition with two Pinus strobus 'Torulosa'.
That's it for now... Larry
